Glass, frame material, spacers, and installation all affect how a window works in your conditions. The glass that suits Phoenix is a different choice than the glass that suits Portland. Denver and San Diego ask different things of the same window.

What Climate Zone Are You In?
Builders group the country into climate zones. The zones are based on temperature, humidity, and how the seasons behave. Each zone puts a different kind of stress on a window.

Hot and Dry: Arizona, Inland Southern California, Southern New Mexico, the Sacramento Valley
Here the sun is the problem. South and west facing windows take in heat all day. Rooms get uncomfortable. Cooling bills go up.
One number helps you compare glass. It is called the solar heat gain coefficient, or SHGC. It measures how much solar heat passes through the glass. A lower number means less heat gets in.
Low-E 340 is often specified where sun is the main problem. Its SHGC is 0.18 at center of glass. It blocks 98% of UV rays. The glass is slightly tinted, and it offers strong glare control.
Cladding matters too, and two separate things are at work.
The metal itself is heavy extruded aluminum. Sierra Pacific cladding is at least twice as thick as roll-form cladding. That thickness relates to durability and dent resistance.
Color holding is a job for the finish, not the metal. Sierra Pacific uses AAMA 2604 and AAMA 2605 powder coat finishes. These are rated for color retention, surface hardness, and scratch resistance. Mixed and Dry: Albuquerque and Higher-Elevation New Mexico
These areas swing. Summers run warm. Winters get cold. Dry air both ways.
The window has to do two opposite jobs. Keep heat out in summer. Hold it in during winter.
Low-E 366 is a common choice in these conditions. It is a triple layer silver coating. Its SHGC is 0.27 at center of glass, and it provides 95% UV protection.
Cold and Very Cold: Colorado, Utah, Montana, Chicago, Interior Pacific Northwest
Denver, Salt Lake City, Chicago, and Spokane all sit in a cold zone. Much of Montana is colder still.
The job here flips. Keep heat inside. Cut drafts.
Triple pane is worth a look. It uses three panes of glass and can combine Low-E coatings to meet stricter energy requirements than a dual pane unit.
Low-E 180 Passive Solar works in a different direction from heat-blocking glass. Its SHGC is 0.68. That is high on purpose. It lets solar energy in. On a south facing wall in Montana or Chicago, that winter sun adds up.
The spacer at the edge of the glass matters too. Many manufacturers use aluminum spacers between panes. Aluminum conducts heat and cold, which works against the glass package. Sierra Pacific uses the No-Metal TrueWarm Edge Spacer. It is 100% polymer structural foam, with no metal at the glass edge.
Sash thickness is worth asking about as well. Sierra Pacific casements, awnings, and door panels use a 2 1/4 inch sash as standard. Structural ratings vary by product and are listed in the product documentation.
One note on condensation. There is an interior surface coating option called i89. It raises insulating value by reflecting heat back into the room. Because of that, the room-side pane runs slightly colder in winter. That raises the chance of condensation on the inside of the glass. Whether that trade is worth making depends on the glass package and the home.
Marine and Coastal: Coastal California, Western Oregon and Washington
Damp air and salt are hard on materials not built for them. Swelling, corrosion, and hardware wear show up sooner in these conditions.
CoreGuard Plus is a patented wood treatment. It penetrates wood to the core to repel water. It also contains fungicides and insecticides to protect against pests and rot. It goes on every wood species, not just pine.
As a standard, CoreGuard Plus is applied to wood components in direct contact with the exterior, along with the clad material and glass. There is also a CoreGuard Plus Complete option that treats all wood components on the unit. In a damp climate, that option is worth asking about.
Hardware is a second thing to ask about. Some components use corrosion-resistant materials as standard. Sliding patio doors use a 300 Series stainless steel gear mechanism and stainless steel ball bearing rollers. Bi-fold doors use hinges with stainless steel bearings. Styles and finishes vary by product, so your Select Remodeler can confirm what is offered on the units you are considering.
Coastal homes sometimes need more than moisture resistance. FeelSafe windows and doors use layered laminated glass and reinforced construction for high wind areas. They are available in Low-E, Low-E 366, or Low-E 340. Whether a home needs impact-rated glazing depends on local code and location.
